A glass reed switch should not be treated as a convenient handle while its leads are bent or trimmed. Define the preparation geometry and support method before the part reaches the board. An electrically functioning sample can still have experienced an unapproved mechanical event at the seal.

Start with the supplied lead condition

Record the exact switch and any factory-formed option. Compare the required board geometry with the supplied lead dimensions. If local preparation is needed, obtain the manufacturer’s limits and approve the tooling before asking operators to make the part fit.

Littelfuse’s reed-switch modification note discusses forming and bending loads near the glass seal. Its guidance supports controlling the force path during preparation; the actual permitted dimensions and method should come from the selected product’s current instructions.

Describe what the fixture supports

Feature Question
Lead support Is the approved region held during the operation?
Forming point Does its position match the released geometry?
Glass body Is it protected from unintended tool contact?
Cutting operation Is the specified trimming method represented?
Board insertion Does the prepared part fit without another bend?

Keep the fixture drawing with the work instruction. A photograph of a completed lead bend does not show how the seal was loaded while that shape was created.

Inspect each stage during qualification

Retain incoming, prepared and inserted samples or images as appropriate. Check the glass and lead exits using the agreed inspection method. Record where any change first appears rather than assigning all observed damage to soldering.

For example, a switch can leave a forming tool in acceptable shape but require a sideways push to enter the board. That insertion event belongs in the qualification, because it can negate the care taken during initial forming.

Keep local re-forming out of routine assembly unless it has been specifically approved. Repeated adjustment to an already prepared lead is a different mechanical history from the released single preparation operation.

Verify the installed device

Perform the required electrical and magnetic actuation checks using the product’s controlled test arrangement. Record the specified magnet or field fixture and orientation so changes in the test itself are not confused with component damage.

Follow supplier disposition guidance for visibly damaged or mishandled parts. A brief switching response does not authorize use of a device outside its handling requirements.

The radial lead-forming guide covers another component with a sensitive lead exit, while mechanical-event mapping helps preserve the sequence of handling operations.
