A trimmer that can be adjusted on a loose prototype may become difficult to reach after enclosure assembly. Define the production tool path and component limits before calibration is released. An electrically correct setting does not justify a method that damages the adjustment feature or loads the PCB.
Identify the mechanical variant
Record the complete trimmer model, adjustment orientation and supplier instructions. Top-adjust and side-adjust variants can place the same circuit function behind very different access requirements. Include the housing opening and neighboring components in the mechanical review.
Bourns’ trimmer tools and hardware information provides adjustment-tool resources alongside component information. Tool selection should follow the actual trimmer specification rather than using whichever screwdriver happens to fit its visible slot.
Draw the approach and support
| Feature | Review question |
|---|---|
| Tool tip | Does it match the permitted adjustment feature? |
| Approach axis | Can it engage without sideways loading? |
| Clearance | Is there room through the enclosure and around components? |
| Board support | Is the assembly held in its approved calibration state? |
| Adjustment limits | Does the procedure respect the component’s mechanical instructions? |
Review the tool at the full range of expected positions. An opening that permits initial engagement may still interfere with rotation or withdrawal after the adjustment.
Separate mechanical access from electrical calibration
Use the circuit’s approved calibration method and operating conditions. Define the direction and endpoint interpretation with the actual board orientation. Do not assume the production operator views the component from the same side as the schematic author.
For example, a side-adjust part may require a tool to pass close to a conductive enclosure. The access method must preserve the required electrical separation during the operation, particularly if adjustment is performed under a powered test procedure.
If adjustment cannot be achieved within the expected range, investigate the circuit and assembly. Forcing the mechanism against its stop is not a valid way to extend the electrical setting.
Verify after tool removal
Repeat the required measurement once the tool is withdrawn and the assembly is in its final state. Record any specified locking or protective treatment as a separate qualified operation with compatible material and controlled application.
Inspect the adjustment feature during qualification for wear or damage from the chosen method. Automatic adjustment equipment should be evaluated with the same component-specific limits as a manual tool.
The support-contact guide helps document fixture contact, while interface measurement review illustrates the value of defining the exact state used for an electrical comparison.
