A dual-access flex exposes the same conductor layer from opposite sides through selected dielectric openings. It can provide useful connection access without a second copper layer, but the exposed region may have less mechanical support than a conventional land on intact film. The access window is part of the structural design.
Make the cross-section unambiguous
Epec explains the dual-access flex construction. Show which dielectric is removed, which copper remains and whether adhesive or coverlay supports the perimeter. Do not describe the window as a plated through-hole unless that is actually the manufactured feature.
The visible opening on one side may differ from the solderable or contactable area on the other. Include registration allowance between copper and both covering layers. A nominal pad that exactly matches the window can become partly unsupported when the cut shifts.
Follow the force through the terminal
A probe, soldering tool or spring contact can deflect exposed copper into the window. Increasing copper thickness may reduce deflection but can compromise bending elsewhere. Local support, a smaller opening or a different termination may address the load more directly. Verify tool approach clearance as well: a fixture that supports the copper successfully can still prevent a soldering tip or mating contact from reaching the required surface at the intended angle.
| Connection operation | Mechanical question |
|---|---|
| Probe contact | Where does the probe force react? |
| Solder attachment | What supports the conductor during heating? |
| Repeated mating | Can rubbing or deflection loosen the window perimeter? |
Inspect both faces after processing
For example, a back-bared terminal may look clean from the top while adhesive partially blocks access from below. Inspect the required contact area from each working direction and check for cut damage, residual dielectric and distortion. Include any finishing process that changes the copper’s surface or thickness.
Use a representative fixture for connection trials and retain sections when the boundary condition remains uncertain. The coverlay-opening review helps define registration, while the stiffener construction review addresses support around a termination. State the permitted connection method in the release package. An access window qualified for one low-force soldering operation should not be treated as a general-purpose spring-contact interface without another mechanical assessment.
