A PoE powered device can request a particular power class without receiving enough power for every optional load. The source’s capability and classification outcome matter. Make the load plan depend on the allocated power, rather than assuming that a high power interface controller guarantees high power from every port.
Identify the allocation indication
The TI TPS2372 data sheet describes allocated power indication and cases where the source grants less than the requested level. Its output encoding must be interpreted with the configured device class and the documented classification behavior.
Record how the host reads that indication across any isolation boundary. Establish a defined state before the indication is valid so startup software does not briefly assume maximum power.
Budget at the correct reference point
Distinguish power available at the powered device interface from useful power delivered by the downstream converter. Include bridge loss, interface consumption, converter efficiency, and other always-on loads.
For a hypothetical 20 W available to a conversion stage operating at 90 percent efficiency, its output budget is 18 W before any additional loads excluded from that estimate. The example is arithmetic only; actual PoE allocation values and limits must come from the applicable implementation.
Define reduced power operation
List essential and optional loads and the order in which they may be enabled. A radio, heater, display, or actuator may need a restricted mode when the allocation is lower. Include startup demand and coincident load events in that decision.
Keep the reduced mode explicit in firmware. Repeatedly enabling a load until the source disconnects is not a controlled way to discover the available budget.
Verify multiple source outcomes
Test with representative source capabilities and the intended cable configurations. Record the classification result, allocation indication, input power, and load sequence. Confirm that the device starts in its permitted mode and remains inside the reviewed budget during transitions.
Check reconnection and source changes. A power allocation observed on one port should not be retained as an assumption after the device reconnects elsewhere.
Save requested class, decoded allocation, conversion assumptions, enabled load combinations, and measured peak and average demand. A useful design connects each operating mode to a verified power budget at a defined reference point. The maximum rating of the PD controller or the nominal wattage printed on a switch does not independently establish what the complete assembly is permitted to consume in a particular connection. Keep that allocation record with the startup log.
