A clip can hold a power package firmly while applying load at the wrong location. Qualification should address the contact region, engagement geometry and complete thermal interface. The fact that a device does not move under a light handling check is not enough to establish an acceptable mounting arrangement.
Use the actual package and clip drawings
Identify the permitted package contact surface and the heat-sink feature that retains the clip. Include dimensional variation in the package, clip and heat sink. Do not transfer a clip from another device merely because it fits across a similar body width.
Infineon’s TO-package mounting discussion treats clip position and the condition of the clip-to-package contact as important loading considerations. Obtain the selected package’s current limits and qualify the specific clip rather than using an example force as a universal target.
Inspect the installed contact map
| Interface | Question |
|---|---|
| Clip to package | Is contact confined to the permitted region? |
| Clip to heat sink | Is the intended retention feature fully engaged? |
| Package to interface material | Is the material correctly located beneath the package? |
| Nearby leads and components | Does the installed clip preserve required clearance? |
Use photographs or another appropriate inspection method to document the actual contact. A view from above may hide an edge contact or incomplete engagement on the far side.
Review installation as well as final retention
Observe how the tool loads the clip and package during assembly. The maximum mechanical event may occur while the clip is being installed, not in its final seated state. Follow the clip and package suppliers’ approved method.
For example, an insertion tool that temporarily bears on a lead can cause a problem even though the finished clip has correct clearance. Include the full tool path in the trial instead of checking only the final geometry.
Record removal instructions if service or rework is intended. Reusing a clip requires evidence within its supplier’s permitted scope; apparent spring action does not establish unchanged performance after an uncontrolled removal.
Connect the mechanical trial to product evidence
Verify relevant thermal performance, electrical isolation and retention after the completed sequence. Keep those conclusions separate so an acceptable temperature result does not obscure a mechanical or insulation issue.
When a heat-sink extrusion or interface material changes, recheck engagement and package loading. The clip part number can remain constant while its installed deflection changes.
The insulation-stack guide addresses the electrical boundary, and thermal-interface review helps define the state used for temperature comparison.
