An insulating pad beneath a power package does not describe the complete electrical boundary around its mounting hardware. The screw path and surrounding features also need an approved construction. Release the entire stack of parts and inspect it before the joint becomes difficult to see.

Identify which surfaces require isolation

Use the exact semiconductor package drawing and electrical specification. Identify any conductive tab, screw, washer and heat sink in the assembly. Do not infer tab potential or insulation from a package’s familiar outline or from a visually similar fully molded variant.

Infineon’s TO-package assembly note illustrates different mounting stacks for exposed-tab and fully insulated package constructions. The examples demonstrate why hardware and insulation requirements must be checked against the actual package rather than transferred by outline name alone.

Make the stack inspectable

Item Inspection question
Interface pad Is the approved material correctly placed?
Bushing Does its position match the released screw-path insulation?
Washer Is its size and order correct for the package?
Fastener Does its geometry match the approved stack?
Surrounding metal Is the required separation retained after fastening?

Use a section drawing and identifiable part numbers. An instruction saying install insulating hardware leaves room for an operator to choose a bushing or washer that fits mechanically but differs from the qualified construction.

Inspect before and after fastening

Check alignment and surface condition before the fastener hides the interface. After tightening by the approved method, verify seating and any visible displacement. Preserve evidence from qualification samples where the final assembly prevents direct inspection.

For example, a correctly placed pad can shift while a device is aligned with the board leads. Reviewing only the initial placement misses the condition actually retained after all mechanical operations.

Include the tooling approach in the trial. A driver that contacts adjacent parts or forces the package sideways changes the assembly even when its torque setting is correct.

Verify the required electrical boundary

Perform the product’s specified insulation examination using an approved test procedure and appropriate equipment. The assembly record should state which boundary was tested. Mechanical fit or a casual continuity reading does not establish every insulation requirement.

Review replacement hardware through the same construction definition. A different shoulder length, washer diameter or interface thickness can change both mechanical seating and the intended isolation path.

The mounting sequence guide connects this stack to soldering, while thermal-interface conditioning keeps thermal evidence separate from electrical insulation evidence.
