A motor driver can ignore or delay the first command after sleep while its internal circuits become ready. If firmware raises the wake signal and immediately sends a short drive pulse, the resulting motion may be smaller than expected or absent. Define readiness before treating command duration as actual motor drive time.
Read the wake sequence
Identify the sleep input, required supply conditions, startup interval, and any reset of internal state. The TI DRV8833 data sheet specifies a wake interval after sleep is released before outputs can change state. It also describes the high impedance bridge state during sleep.
Use the selected driver’s timing limits and conditions. A startup time observed on one room temperature unit is not a guaranteed bound for all operating conditions or for another driver with similar pins.
Separate wake and drive commands
Hold the motor control inputs in a defined inactive state while requesting wake, then wait for the documented readiness condition before issuing motion. If a ready indication is provided, interpret it according to its specification. Otherwise, use a timing method whose duration remains valid during processor startup and clock changes.
Include the state of direction and mode inputs. A driver becoming active with stale commands can produce an unintended pulse even if the wake delay itself is correct.
Measure at the bridge output
Capture sleep input, control command, motor supply, and bridge output voltage together. Compare the requested first pulse with the actual output interval. A logic analyzer trace of firmware pins alone cannot establish when the power stage began driving.
Repeat with short and long sleep durations and with the intended load connected. Supply recovery or internal charge pump startup can interact with the first current demand. Check any fault or undervoltage indication during the event.
Verify repeated sleep cycles
Test the complete sequence at relevant supply and temperature conditions, including rapid sleep and wake requests. Confirm that the firmware does not count an unexecuted pulse as completed motion. For open loop positioning, this distinction can otherwise accumulate into a persistent position error.
Save the state sequence, delay implementation, timing captures, and resulting motion or current evidence. Keep a full power up test separate from wake out of sleep because the retained state may differ. A reliable interface ensures that the first command reaches an operational driver with defined control inputs. Observing correct steady PWM after several milliseconds does not prove that the initial command was honored.
