A dimensional trial on an LCP flexible circuit needs more information than a final outline measurement. Preserve the supplied material orientation and the sequence of measurements through processing. This allows the fabricator to determine whether a proposed scaling correction addresses a repeatable change in the actual construction.
Identify the complete laminate
Record the exact LCP grade, copper construction and supplied thickness. Obtain the current supplier processing guidance and orientation convention. Do not transfer a correction developed for a polyimide laminate simply because both materials are flexible.
Panasonic’s FELIOS LCP information identifies a specific double-sided copper-clad LCP material family. Its material designation should remain attached to trial results; the word LCP alone does not define every copper, thickness or processing variant.
Choose references before starting the trial
| Reference | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Supplied direction | Connects the sheet to the material orientation |
| Panel axes | Preserves position through processing |
| Measurement targets | Provides repeatable dimensional locations |
| Support method | Defines how the flexible sample is measured |
| Conditioning state | Makes stage comparisons meaningful |
Measure with an approved method that does not introduce uncontrolled stretching or flattening. Record whether the sample is free or restrained, and keep that condition consistent when comparing stages.
Locate the dimensional change
Collect readings at planned process stages rather than only at receipt and final inspection. Preserve copper-pattern state and any lamination or thermal operation between readings. If a local region behaves differently, retain the local map rather than reducing the entire panel to one average scale.
For example, a change measured after copper removal should not automatically be assigned to the final bonding cycle. Intermediate readings help identify which operation the compensation would actually address.
Use representative production geometry in the trial. A solid copper coupon may not reproduce the behavior of the patterned flex region whose connector registration matters.
Repeat the measurement after removing and replacing a sample in its support during method qualification. This helps determine whether apparent dimensional movement comes from the process or from how the flexible material is positioned for inspection.
Release compensation with its evidence
Document the accepted material, construction, orientation and process route alongside any approved data correction. Keep original design geometry distinguishable from manufacturing compensation.
Verify the resulting connector and assembly interfaces as well as nominal panel dimensions. A better fit at one target should not conceal a larger error at another functional location.
When copper or material grade changes, determine whether the earlier trial remains representative. The imaging-scaling guide controls the data application, while foil-orientation records address a different directional attribute that should not be confused with the laminate reference.
