A PCB battery holder must be evaluated both as a soldered component and as the mechanical interface used to insert and retain a cell. Define those stages separately. The assembly route should specify when the battery is installed instead of leaving its presence during manufacturing to local habit.

Identify the exact holder construction

Keystone’s SMT holder information distinguishes holder variants by cell size, spring arrangement and packaging, and identifies the range as reflow-compatible. That statement concerns the holder; it does not establish a soldering or heating allowance for an installed battery.

Use the holder and cell manufacturers’ instructions to define the permitted assembly sequence. Keep the cell absent from operations for which its presence has not been approved.

Inspect the holder after its joining process

Check the soldered attachments, housing condition and contact geometry before inserting a cell. Record the holder orientation and intended polarity. A part can be firmly soldered while still being misoriented relative to the circuit.

For example, a holder variant with a different spring arrangement can change the insertion method even if it accepts the same nominal cell format. Review the actual mechanical interface instead of using cell size as the only interchangeability criterion.

Define insertion support and access

Feature Review question
Entry path Can the cell be inserted by the prescribed method?
Board support Where does insertion load reach the assembly?
Polarity Is orientation unambiguous and checked?
Nearby metal Is the intended clearance maintained?
Removal Can the service action use the approved method?

Do not use a metal tool in an improvised removal method. Follow the cell and holder instructions and define access in the product so a user or operator need not invent one.

A nonenergized dimensional sample can help review the insertion path when its use is appropriate, but identify its purpose explicitly. It does not replace checks with the specified cell for electrical contact, polarity or the product’s completed operating configuration.

Verify the installed condition

  1. Complete the pre-insertion holder inspection.
  2. Install the specified cell by the approved method.
  3. Check retention and contact behavior.
  4. Verify the circuit’s intended polarity and function.
  5. Review the required service insertion and removal sequence.

A brief power-on test does not establish the mechanical reliability of the contact or soldered mounting. Include the product’s applicable retention and environmental requirements in qualification.

Keep cell installation status visible on work-in-progress assemblies. A board returned for rework may otherwise enter a process designed for an empty holder.

The support contact guide covers manufacturing fixtures, while sequence control for removable items illustrates how a defined assembly state prevents later handling mistakes.
