A transformerless Ethernet connection can be appropriate for a specifically supported internal application, but removing magnetics changes more than the bill of materials. Biasing, coupling, common mode behavior, and isolation all need review. A successful short bench link does not establish that the circuit is suitable for a general external network port.

Start with an explicitly supported configuration

The TI DP83848 transformerless Ethernet application report discusses particular PHY transmit and receive requirements and the role normally served by transformer biasing and isolation. Its circuit arrangements should be evaluated within the stated PHY and application scope.

Identify both endpoint devices and the actual interface mode. A circuit for one PHY cannot be assumed compatible with another device’s line driver or receiver merely because both support the same nominal data rate.

Account for DC and common mode conditions

Draw each endpoint’s bias network, coupling capacitors, termination, and supply reference. Determine which DC voltages are blocked and which references remain connected through other paths. Include test equipment and enclosure connections that may exist in the product.

Check capacitor voltage rating, signal amplitude, and common mode operating range using the supported design guidance. A capacitor that blocks DC is not automatically a substitute for every isolation function provided by a qualified transformer arrangement.

Define the physical application boundary

Record whether the connection stays inside one assembly, crosses between separately powered boards, or reaches an accessible connector. Establish the relevant isolation and fault requirements for that actual installation.

Do not turn an internal experimental connection into a general purpose external port by changing only the connector. The electrical environment and required behavior may be substantially different even if the data packets still pass.

Verify link operation under realistic conditions

Test the supported speed, cable or interconnect length, supply combinations, startup order, and relevant common mode conditions. Observe error counters and signal behavior with a measurement setup that does not create an unintended reference path.

Include one endpoint powered while the other is off if that can occur in use. Check the manufacturer’s permitted pin conditions rather than assuming the coupling network removes every unpowered interface concern.

Save the reference design scope, bias calculations, interconnect definition, applicable isolation review, and measured operating results. A valid conclusion describes the specific supported connection and its verified limits. It does not generalize a transformerless link demonstration into a universal replacement for Ethernet magnetics across other PHYs, connectors, or installation environments.
