A bead that cures on an open test coupon may not represent adhesive enclosed between a board and a housing. Before releasing a one-part moisture-curing material, evaluate the actual geometry and the sequence that closes the assembly. Surface appearance alone is an incomplete description of cure through the joint.
Identify the cure mechanism
Dow’s electronics adhesive overview distinguishes one-part moisture-curing RTV materials from two-part and heat-curing systems. These families use different processing routes; a schedule suitable for one family should not be copied to another simply because both products are silicones.
Obtain the selected material’s instructions for cure depth, environment and compatible substrates. Discuss an enclosed geometry with the supplier when the published data do not represent the application.
Draw the adhesive’s access to the environment
Show the bead or bond area, enclosed surfaces and any remaining exposed edges. Identify when covers, shields or other parts are installed. The relevant geometry is the construction during cure, which may differ from the final product drawing.
| Feature | Qualification question |
|---|---|
| Bead cross section | Does the supplier guidance represent the actual material depth? |
| Exposed edge | What access remains after assembly? |
| Closure time | At what stage is the adhesive enclosed? |
| Environment | Are the required cure conditions maintained? |
Inspect representative cured samples
Choose an examination method that evaluates the relevant interior condition, with supplier or laboratory advice where needed. A touch test at the exposed edge cannot by itself establish the state of material farther inside the joint.
For example, a housing may be closed immediately in production even though the development sample remained open overnight. Compare these routes explicitly before using the open sample as evidence for the closed process.
Record assembly loading while the adhesive develops the required properties. Handling a product because its surface appears dry may differ from the manufacturer’s permitted time to apply mechanical load.
Include the largest permitted bead or enclosed region in the qualification, where the supplier considers that comparison appropriate. Testing only a convenient small deposit can leave the geometry that controls the production cure unexamined, even though the material and environmental settings are identical.
Release the construction and sequence together
Verify bond performance after the complete cure and relevant conditioning. Include other requirements such as sealing, material compatibility and access for service where they apply.
If the available production interval cannot support the material’s requirements, review another approved construction or adhesive system. Do not compensate by raising temperature or humidity without supplier-supported limits and qualification.
The primer guide controls the incoming surface, while cover-installation review illustrates why closure timing changes access to an assembly.
