A MIPI D PHY lane changes electrical behavior between low power and high speed operation. A probing arrangement that produces a convincing high speed eye may obscure or disturb the low power transition. Plan the measurement around the states needed for the diagnosis instead of treating the lane as an ordinary continuous differential signal.

Identify the states being measured

The Tektronix D PHY measurement documentation distinguishes terminated differential high speed signaling from unterminated single-ended low power signaling. A suitable measurement must account for both behaviors when evaluating transitions between them.

Record the D PHY version, operating rate, clocking mode, lane count, and transmitter or receiver boundary under investigation. Keep specification limits associated with that version and measurement location.

Select the probe arrangement deliberately

Check input impedance, capacitance, common-mode range, differential range, and bandwidth. Determine whether the instrument can reconstruct the required single-ended and differential views from the chosen connections.

A differential trace alone can conceal which conductor changed first or whether a single-ended low power level was valid. Conversely, two unmatched probing paths can introduce apparent skew when their channels are combined. Calibrate and deskew the measurement arrangement as appropriate.

Capture the full state transition

Acquire enough history to show the low power state, entry sequence, high speed burst, and return. Use a trigger suited to the specific transition rather than collecting only the middle of an already established data burst.

For a camera link that fails on the first frame, compare the first burst after startup with later bursts. A steady stream capture may miss the event that explains the failure.

Check lane relationships

Correlate data lanes with the clock lane or applicable clocking behavior. Confirm whether the observed failure affects one lane, all lanes, or only a mode change. Record the transmitter’s configuration and the receiver’s interpretation at the same time.

Repeat at supported rates and meaningful supply or temperature conditions. Do not assume that one probe setup remains nonintrusive across every state and frequency. If attaching the probe changes the failure rate, treat that as part of the evidence.

Use compliance analysis only with the required fixtures, calibration, and settings. An engineering capture can identify a sequencing defect without constituting a formal compliance result.

Save raw waveforms, probe connections, instrument settings, and state annotations. The useful deliverable is a trace that explains the transition in both its single-ended and differential forms. A clean high speed eye alone cannot establish that low power signaling and mode entry satisfy the requirements needed for the complete link to operate.
