A successful pickup does not prove that the nozzle contacted an LED in an acceptable way. A silicone-covered package may require a particular contact arrangement that differs from a conventional molded IC. Review the tool against the exact package before increasing pickup force to solve a handling problem.

Identify the permitted contact surface

Use the manufacturer’s current package drawing and handling instructions. Mark the optical surface, structural body and any permitted pickup region. Do not infer permission from a flat-looking area in a photograph or from another LED in the same size class.

Cree LED’s XD16 handling guide addresses pickup nozzle construction and excessive force on silicone-covered LED components. Its instructions apply to that package family; obtain the corresponding guidance for the LED actually being assembled.

Review the complete handling path

Stage Contact to examine
Pickup Nozzle location and engagement with the packaged part
Transfer Clearance to tooling and neighboring parts
Placement Force and seating at the board
Later handling Fixture, cleaning and manual contact near the optical surface

Record the nozzle model and actual installed tip. A setup sheet that names only the placement machine leaves an important part of the physical interface undefined.

Preserve the first observable change

Inspect identified samples before placement, after placement and after reflow as appropriate to the investigation. Keep optical surface images at comparable magnification and lighting. This helps determine whether the visible condition existed before the thermal process.

For example, if a circular mark appears immediately after pickup, a change to reflow settings will not explain its first occurrence. Inspect the tool contact and any retained contamination before expanding the trial.

Where several LED packages share a line, confirm that the setup selects the correct tip after each changeover. Photograph the installed tip and its centered position on a representative part; the tool magazine entry alone does not establish that physical alignment.

Verify more than pickup yield

  1. Confirm the approved contact arrangement.
  2. Check package condition after handling.
  3. Inspect the resulting solder joints.
  4. Measure relevant optical and electrical behavior.
  5. Retain the accepted tool and settings together.

Electrical operation alone does not establish an undamaged optical surface. Similarly, a clean-looking lens does not establish an acceptable thermal or solder connection beneath the package.

Review nozzle maintenance with the same material compatibility requirements as the initial tool selection. A cleaning method that changes the tip or leaves residue can change the contact even though its part number remains constant.

If a supplier changes the LED package construction, reopen the pickup review. The support contact map covers other equipment interfaces, while thermal profiling keeps soldering evidence separate from handling damage.
