A correct placement coordinate can still produce a reversed component when the feeder presents the package differently from the setup assumption. Treat carrier orientation as an input to the placement transformation. The board angle alone does not describe how a component arrives at the nozzle.
TI’s industrial packaging report illustrates carrier dimensions and orientation quadrants. Use the packing information for the actual orderable part and received material when preparing production; a general package-family drawing is only a starting reference.
Document the incoming presentation
Record the full manufacturer part number, packing suffix, lot identification, and whether the material is original tape, cut tape, or a reeled derivative. Photograph a representative pocket with the sprocket holes and feed direction visible. An isolated close-up of a package loses the references needed to interpret its rotation. Include the viewed side explicitly when photographs are shared, because a flipped image can reverse the apparent orientation.
Identify pin one from the manufacturer’s package drawing and marking convention. A mold mark, logo, or printed text direction should not become the orientation reference merely because it is easy to see. If markings are ambiguous, resolve them before loading the feeder.
Follow the transformation through placement
| Stage | Reference to establish |
|---|---|
| Carrier | Feed direction, sprocket side, package pin one |
| Machine library | Recognized package angle and pickup convention |
| Placement file | Footprint zero angle, board side, rotation convention |
| Assembled board | Physical pin one against the approved assembly drawing |
Keep these references separate in the setup record. Entering an angle correction into the placement file to compensate for one particular feeder can conceal a library error and create another error when material presentation changes.
Verify a representative placement
- Compare the received carrier with the recorded orientation.
- Confirm the machine component definition used for this material.
- Inspect a first placement using an unambiguous board landmark.
- Check electrically asymmetric connections against the schematic.
- Retain the approved setup and the material identity together.
Use special care when a package appears symmetric or the visible mark changes between accepted manufacturers. A visually plausible placement is insufficient if opposite orientations connect different terminals. The inspection method must discriminate the actual error being considered.
Repeat the presentation check when a reel is replaced, a distributor changes packing, or an alternate manufacturer is introduced. This does not automatically require redesigning the board; it requires verifying the transformation that the assembly process uses. The placement origin and rotation review covers the design-side reference that completes this chain.
