Enabling spread spectrum changes how switching activity is distributed in frequency. A lower narrow peak can be useful, but its significance depends on the measurement bandwidth, detector and the rest of the spectrum. Evaluate the entire relevant result rather than reporting only the best-looking peak.
Define the modulation being used
TI’s application note on dual random spread spectrum discusses the relationship between modulation and receiver bandwidth, as well as possible effects on ripple and neighboring frequency bands. Those dependencies are reasons to test the actual configuration rather than assume a universal reduction in decibels.
Record the controller setting, nominal switching frequency, supported spread mode and any synchronization condition. Verify that the feature is actually active in the operating mode being measured. Some power-stage modes or external clock arrangements can change the behavior.
Use paired measurements
Capture enabled and disabled states with the same supply, load, cables, detector, bandwidth and observation time. Retain the complete frequency range relevant to the review. An improved fundamental can coexist with a higher level elsewhere, especially near another sensitive circuit or evaluation band.
Repeat the pair after restoring the original state when practical. This checks whether a drifting operating condition contributed to the apparent improvement. Save instrument configurations and raw traces so that the comparison can be revisited without relying on screenshots alone.
Check the time domain too
Measure output ripple, relevant current variation and response to load changes with the feature enabled. Keep the same bandwidth definition used for the product’s ripple requirement. A frequency-domain improvement does not independently establish that the supply still meets its time-domain limits.
For sensitive measurement or communication circuits powered by the converter, observe their actual performance. Look for effects tied to the modulation pattern rather than assuming a lower spectral peak always reduces every form of interference. The receiving circuit’s bandwidth and timing determine what it experiences.
Keep the conclusion conditional
State which frequencies, detectors and operating states improved, and identify any tradeoff that remained. If the comparison is a development measurement, describe it accordingly and use the responsible laboratory’s method for formal evaluation. Do not treat a changed display setting as evidence of a changed product.
Retain the selected spread-spectrum configuration as a controlled design parameter. A future firmware change that disables the feature or changes operating mode can invalidate the measured result. The useful outcome is a documented configuration whose emissions and functional performance have both been checked, rather than a general claim that spread spectrum removes switching noise.
