A flash memory that responds reliably after power up may intermittently fail after system sleep. Deep power down has its own entry and exit protocol, and the first read can arrive before recovery is complete. Treat resume as a timed interface sequence rather than assuming a command instantly restores normal access.
Identify the exact sleep state
Distinguish standby, deep power down, hardware reset, and removal of supply power. Each can have different retained state and recovery requirements. Confirm that the command used by firmware enters the intended state and that no program or erase operation is still active.
The Winbond W25Q128JV data sheet specifies a release from power down instruction and a recovery interval with chip select high before normal commands resume. It also distinguishes timing when the same instruction is used to obtain identification. Apply the sequence for the actual command form and part revision.
Measure the first access
Capture chip select, clock, and data from the wake event through the first successful read. Mark the end of the release command and the beginning of the next command. Verify the required delay in real elapsed time, including the state of chip select during that interval.
A software delay expressed in loop iterations can change with processor clock configuration or optimization. Use a timing mechanism whose behavior is defined during resume, and verify it on the pins.
Include hidden access sources
Check whether instruction fetch, DMA, a debugger, or another task can access the memory before the resume sequence finishes. A driver may wait correctly while another bus user issues an earlier read. Establish ownership of the interface during the transition.
If code executes directly from external flash, ensure the wake routine and everything it needs remain available while that flash cannot answer normal reads. Include interrupt handlers and constant data in that dependency review.
Verify recovery as a system event
Read known data immediately after the permitted recovery interval and compare it with the expected pattern. Repeat sleep and wake under relevant supply and temperature conditions. Also verify that the measured current actually reaches the intended sleep state, since a successful read alone does not prove that deep power down was entered.
Record the command sequence, timing source, interface ownership, and first data check. Do not hide an unexplained first-read failure by discarding one transaction. The sequence should explain when the memory becomes ready and prevent every other access until that condition is satisfied.
