For a PTFE-based board, a generic hole-treatment entry can conceal a critical process distinction. Identify the actual surface activation and the following metallization route together. A treatment approved in one sequence should not be substituted into another without a material and process review.
Name the complete sequence
Rogers’ RT/duroid 5870/5880 guidance distinguishes activation choices according to the subsequent metallization method. Use the current instructions for the exact laminate; the word PTFE covers a family of constructions rather than one interchangeable production recipe.
Record material designation, drilled state, approved treatment reference and conductive deposition method. Keep any intervening handling or storage operation in the route instead of compressing the entire sequence into one completed checkbox.
Define the process handoff
| Handoff item | Definition |
|---|---|
| Incoming surface | Construction and prior processing state |
| Activation | Approved material-specific procedure |
| Intervening handling | Permitted conditions and recorded history |
| Metallization | Qualified following deposition route |
| Verification | Evidence required at intermediate and final stages |
The process owner should establish any permitted interval or recovery procedure from qualification and supplier guidance. Do not invent a universal waiting-time allowance from another product’s production history.
Investigate a change as a sequence change
If a line transfer changes activation, deposition or the intervening operation, identify all three explicitly. Obtain the relevant material and chemistry specialists’ review before assuming the original approval still applies.
For example, moving treated panels to another production area may introduce a new holding arrangement even when the treatment itself is unchanged. Include that arrangement in the trial record so an unexplained coating result can be investigated against actual history.
Inspect the relevant result
- Confirm that the sample represents the intended hole construction.
- Review intermediate coverage using the approved method.
- Examine the completed plated feature.
- Include required adhesion or reliability evidence.
- Release the documented material-and-process combination.
A continuity result alone cannot reconstruct the surface condition before deposition. Keep the evidence from each stage with the final product record when it is needed for qualification or troubleshooting.
Retain uncertain panels as an identifiable group until the responsible team assigns a disposition. Repeating an undocumented treatment should not become an informal repair merely because the original record is missing.
Use separate route identifiers when production intentionally supports more than one qualified combination. Operators should be able to distinguish the required next operation from the panel record, without reconstructing a technical decision from a familiar laminate trade name alone.
The coverage guide supports stage-specific investigation, while PTFE drilling review addresses the surface presented to this sequence.
