Pressure sensor auto zero is useful only when the pressure during calibration is known. Storing the first reading after startup as zero can erase a real pressure and shift every later result. Define the physical reference condition before implementing the arithmetic.

Identify what zero means

The Honeywell auto zero technical note describes estimating offset from a known reference pressure and subtracting that offset from subsequent measurements. It distinguishes the reference conditions associated with different pressure sensor types.

Label the sensor as absolute, gauge, or differential and draw every pressure port. Atmospheric exposure is not zero absolute pressure. Equal pressure at both ports can establish zero differential pressure, provided the connection actually allows them to equalize.

Establish the reference physically

Document valve states, vent paths, tubing, and the required settling interval. Check for trapped pressure, liquid columns, blocked vents, or residual flow. A controller command that stops a pump does not necessarily prove that pressure has returned to the chosen reference.

Where the system cannot create or reliably identify a known reference, do not perform an automatic correction simply because a timer expired. Retain the last qualified correction or use a different calibration method appropriate to the application.

Calculate and bound the correction

Compute offset as measured pressure minus reference pressure, using consistent units and the sensor’s specified transfer function. Average only samples taken after the reference is stable and reject invalid status values.

For a hypothetical differential sensor reading 12 Pa at a verified zero condition, the stored offset is 12 Pa. A later raw reading of 112 Pa becomes 100 Pa after correction. If the initial physical pressure was actually 10 Pa, the same procedure would introduce a 10 Pa error.

Verify more than the corrected zero

Apply at least one suitable nonzero reference to check that the remaining response is reasonable. Offset subtraction does not correct every span, nonlinearity, or hysteresis error. A displayed zero alone provides no evidence about those properties.

Record temperature and time with the correction and define an acceptable correction range. An unusually large change should trigger investigation of the sensor and pneumatic path rather than being silently absorbed as normal drift.

Save reference evidence, stable sample window, raw value, stored offset, and independent pressure checks. A trustworthy auto zero routine is a controlled measurement at a known physical state. It should not function as a general mechanism for making an inconvenient startup reading disappear from the display.
