Two prepreg resin-content percentages should not be treated as equivalent until their measurement bases are understood. The material construction, specimen preparation and selected method belong with the number. This matters when investigating thickness variation or comparing incoming lots.

Identify the agreed method

Record the supplier’s material designation, reinforcement style, nominal resin-content option and applicable test-method revision. Ask which method produced the certificate value and which method the receiving laboratory intends to use.

IPC-TM-650 2.3.16 describes a burn-off method for prepreg reinforced with inorganic fabric, using mass measurements before and after resin removal. Its stated scope should be checked before applying the method to an unfamiliar filled or reinforced material.

Map the specimen to the supplied sheet

Mark the sampled sheet and location before removal. If the concern is variation across a sheet, retain individual results by position rather than combining them immediately into a single average. If the concern is lot identity, choose a sampling plan that actually represents the lot under review.

Evidence Purpose
Sheet and location Connect the result to the observed variation
Method and revision Make supplier and receiving results comparable
Original mass records Allow calculation review
Material construction Check whether the method is applicable
Conditioning history Describe the specimen before measurement

Have the laboratory follow the complete approved procedure. This guide is a review framework, not a substitute for its furnace, weighing or handling instructions. Record any deviation and obtain its technical disposition before using the result for acceptance.

Do not substitute unrelated quantities

Keep resin content distinct from treated weight and pressed dielectric thickness. They can support the same manufacturing investigation, but they answer different questions. A resin-content measurement alone does not predict how a particular copper pattern and lamination cycle will consolidate.

For example, a thickness complaint near a heavily patterned area should retain both material evidence and construction evidence. Finding that the incoming prepreg meets its resin-content requirement does not close every possible cause of the local thickness difference.

Resolve a disagreement with matched evidence

When supplier and receiving values disagree, compare method, mass basis, preparation and locations before deciding which result is wrong. Preserve split samples where practical and document the agreed retest route. Do not repeatedly select new locations until a preferred answer appears.

State the accepted result with its scope and retain any unresolved spatial variation. The gel-time guide covers a separate incoming characteristic, and subcomposite history connects material identity to later processing.
