A pipeline ADC reports a conversion after the analog sampling event that produced it. Additional interface and processing stages add further delay. If a trigger, channel tag, or overrange indication follows a different path, valid numbers can be assigned to the wrong event even though the digital interface has no bit errors.

Build the timing chain

The Analog Devices AD9238 data sheet specifies pipeline latency separately from output propagation delay and describes overrange behavior. These are different timing quantities and should not be combined into one unexplained delay value.

Draw the analog sampling event, converter pipeline, output capture, FPGA registers, buffering, and application timestamp. Record delays in clock cycles or time with the corresponding clock identified.

Use a distinguishable input event

Apply a repeatable pulse or step that stays within the permitted input conditions and has a known relationship to the sampling clock. Capture enough preceding and following samples to identify the event unambiguously.

Account for the analog path’s own delay and settling. An observed shift cannot be assigned entirely to the ADC pipeline if a filter or driver precedes the converter.

Trace status alongside data

Check how overrange and other status signals relate to output samples in the device timing documentation. Carry those indications through the same logical association as the data they describe.

For example, if an additional register is inserted in the data path but not in its status path, an overrange flag may be attached to the preceding sample. A record of plausible values can conceal this defect until an exceptional input occurs.

Check reset and mode changes

Determine when output data becomes valid after startup, reset, or a supported operating-mode change. Do not assume that a valid electrical word immediately represents a settled, correctly aligned analog conversion.

Repeat the event test after changes to clock rate, interface configuration, or buffering. A delay expressed in cycles changes its duration when the clock changes, while a separate analog delay may remain approximately fixed.

Inspect the complete application record rather than only the FPGA input pins. Buffer boundaries, dropped records, and timestamp placement can introduce an additional association error downstream.

Save the timing chain, event stimulus, raw samples, status alignment, and validity rules. The completed review should allow a reviewer to identify the acquisition time associated with any reported sample and determine whether its status is applicable. Correct code values alone do not establish correct timing when the product uses those values to locate or classify events.
