A paper PCB drawing can be useful for checking connector access or component placement, but an unnoticed print-scaling option can invalidate the comparison. A document labeled 1:1 is not proof that the physical print is full size. Verify the print itself before using it as a dimensional reference.

Adobe’s page-size printing guidance distinguishes Fit from Actual size and notes that unscaled content can be cropped when it exceeds the printable area. Review the selected page and printer behavior rather than accepting the default preview.

Establish the intended use

Decide whether the print is a rough visual aid or part of a controlled verification method. A paper overlay does not replace the dimensional drawing, fabrication data, or an appropriate measurement of the finished board. State the limitation when circulating the print.

Use a PDF generated from the correct board revision and side. Include clearly labeled reference distances in both horizontal and vertical directions. A single dimension may not expose every scaling or distortion problem in the print path.

Check the printing chain

Stage Potential issue
EDA export Drawing view already uses a reduced scale
PDF print setting Fit or custom percentage changes physical size
Printer driver Additional scaling or paper-size conversion
Physical print Clipping, distortion, or an incorrect selected page

Inspect the complete perimeter and critical features after printing. A printer may preserve scale while clipping a board edge or reference mark. That print is still unsuitable for a comparison that depends on the missing geometry.

Measure before overlaying

  1. Confirm the board and document revision.
  2. Print with the reviewed application and driver settings.
  3. Measure the horizontal and vertical reference distances.
  4. Check orientation using an asymmetric feature.
  5. Record the print’s verified purpose and limitations.

If the dimensions disagree, diagnose the export or print settings before adjusting the PCB design. Manually stretching a PDF to make one distance fit can conceal an error elsewhere and breaks the relationship to the controlled design data.

Use the overlay to identify questions for further review, such as a connector’s approximate access or an obvious body collision. Resolve critical clearances using the appropriate mechanical model and tolerance analysis. Preserve the measured reference distances with the print review, and repeat the check after changing the printer, driver, paper settings, or export method. A previously verified setup does not validate a different print path.

The STEP clearance guide addresses a more detailed digital comparison with the enclosure, including the need to verify what geometry the export actually contains.
