Reducing optocoupler LED current can save power, but the output circuit must still meet its logic requirement at that current. A current transfer ratio stated at a different test point is not automatically a guaranteed value for the lower-power operating condition.
Use the exact grade and conditions
The Vishay VO618A data sheet provides CTR group information and characteristic curves against operating conditions. It illustrates the need to distinguish a guaranteed selection range from typical normalized behavior and to retain the full ordering suffix.
Record minimum LED current after supply, resistor and forward-voltage tolerances. Identify the collector-emitter voltage and temperature conditions relevant to the desired output state. Check that the applicable CTR information covers those conditions, rather than selecting a convenient point from a typical graph.
Calculate the receiving-side demand
Determine the collector current needed to pull the receiving node below its maximum accepted low level. Include pull-up current, receiver leakage and other connected loads. For illustration, a 3.3 V pull-up through 10 kilohms requires about 0.3 mA to reach 0.3 V, before adding other current contributions.
Relate that demand to the minimum available LED current using the appropriate transfer information. Keep margin for documented temperature and lifetime effects. Do not assign a universal aging factor to every optocoupler; use supplier information applicable to the selected device and operating conditions.
Check release as well as assertion
A stronger pull-up reduces the resistance of the receiving node but increases the current the optocoupler must sink. A weaker pull-up reduces sink demand while changing the node’s charging behavior and susceptibility to leakage. Evaluate both low-state voltage and the time to return high.
Measure the shortest intended pulses and fastest required repetition pattern. Include the receiving input’s threshold and any filter capacitance. A circuit that switches correctly when toggled slowly can still stretch or lose pulses under the real timing requirement.
Preserve the selection evidence
Verify representative low-current, temperature and supply conditions using the approved component grade. Record LED current, output voltage and timing together. Keep the test arrangement and load values with the calculation so another reviewer can reproduce the operating point.
State which CTR grades are permitted in the BOM and which require a new review. Treat this electrical transfer check separately from the product’s isolation and spacing requirements. A successful logic-level test demonstrates signal operation under the tested conditions; it does not establish every other property of the isolation boundary. Preserve the tested ordering suffix in every recorded result.
