Driving one LED from an MCU pin may satisfy its electrical limits, while driving many identical LEDs simultaneously exceeds a shared constraint. GPIO current limits can apply to individual pins, groups of pins, supply connections, and the complete package. A board review must consider the combination of outputs that can actually occur.
Separate ratings from logic-level guarantees
Device data sheets, such as ST’s STM32U031 data sheet, distinguish individual and summed current ratings. The output-high and output-low characteristics provide another limit: the current at which the required logic voltage is guaranteed. Absolute maximum current is not a normal drive specification.
As a hypothetical example, twelve indicators each drawing 6 mA produce 72 mA of output current when all are active. That arithmetic is only the start. Determine whether the currents are sourced or sunk, which supply domain serves the pins, and whether the exact package has the necessary margin. Include pullups, transistor base currents, and external logic loads that may be active in the same state.
Build a state-based current table
Evaluate normal display patterns, lamp test, bootloader operation, fault indication, and firmware crashes that leave all outputs asserted. If PWM is used, average current describes some thermal effects, but instantaneous current remains relevant to pin and switching behavior. Do not assume independently controlled channels can never overlap unless hardware enforces that restriction.
| State | Information to collect |
|---|---|
| Normal operation | Maximum simultaneous source and sink loads |
| Startup | Reset pin modes and external bias paths |
| Diagnostic pattern | All-on and rapidly changing outputs |
| Fault or halted firmware | Persistent output combinations |
Measure delivered levels under the full load
With the worst intended combination active, measure output voltages, local supply disturbance, and device temperature. Check whether a heavily loaded output still meets the receiving device’s input threshold. Simultaneous edges may also create transient ground movement even when the static current total is acceptable.
A dedicated driver or external transistor array can move load current out of the MCU, but its supply routing and control polarity need review. Connect this analysis with GPIO state auditing and LED branch-current checks. Save the allowed combinations and any firmware dependency with the hardware design so a new diagnostic mode does not invalidate the electrical budget.
