When laser-drilled vias appear displaced, begin with the target recognition record and the coordinate transformation. A manual offset may improve one location while hiding an incorrect target interpretation. Preserve the image and setup that the machine actually used.

Connect the digital target to the physical panel

ESI’s flex-laser processing guide emphasizes consistent alignment references, suitable target definition and compatible geometry transformations across processes. These are reasons to review the entire reference chain, not merely the final hole coordinates.

Identify the target’s design coordinates, layer and physical appearance at the drilling stage. Confirm that the selected target belongs to the intended panel orientation and data revision.

Retain the recognition evidence

Evidence Review question
Target image What feature did the system observe?
Selected center Which position was accepted?
Target set Which points contributed to alignment?
Transformation How were nominal coordinates changed?
Residual comparison What differences remain at checked locations?

Keep failed recognition images where available. They may show a contrast, contamination or pattern ambiguity that disappears after the panel has been handled again.

Use independent positions to check the result

Measure representative features beyond the alignment points themselves. A transformation can match its selected references while leaving relevant local differences elsewhere. The investigation needs the actual via-to-land relationship at the product features.

For example, if the wrong circular boundary is recognized around a target, changing a global offset may make one coupon look acceptable. Reviewing the original image can reveal why that correction would not remain stable across later panels.

Control the proposed correction

  1. Resolve target identity and viewing conventions.
  2. Check the approved recognition setup.
  3. Compare the intended and applied coordinate transformations.
  4. Trial a defined change using representative locations.
  5. Retain the accepted setup with the resulting measurements.

Do not overwrite the original machine report with the corrected values. Both states are needed to explain which assumption changed and why the released setup is supported.

When targets move because the panelization changes, recheck the transformation coverage. Reusing a familiar job name does not prove that the same physical alignment arrangement remains in place.

Keep the machine’s target names mapped to the drawing labels. If a maintenance or software change renumbers them, preserve that mapping explicitly; otherwise a comparison of two reports may pair different physical targets merely because their displayed identifiers look identical.

The imaging transformation guide covers upstream scaling. The drill and innerlayer comparison separates hole displacement from movement of the feature it must meet.
