A JESD204 link can carry plausible samples while its alignment changes after reset. When deterministic latency depends on SYSREF capture, check the timing relationship at every participating device. A successful link initialization is useful evidence, but it does not demonstrate that all devices captured the same intended timing event.
Separate link operation from alignment
The Analog Devices AD9081 and AD9082 user guide describes SYSREF setup and hold requirements and device facilities for examining capture timing. Those facilities have operating limitations; a status register should be interpreted using the applicable device revision and clock configuration.
Record the JESD subclass, converter clock, SYSREF mode, clock distribution settings, and the point where repeatable latency matters. Identify whether the requirement concerns one converter, several converters, or alignment between conversion and an external event.
Sweep the controllable delay
Start from a documented initialization sequence. Adjust one supported SYSREF delay at a time while keeping the device clock arrangement fixed. At each step, repeat the capture and read relevant status using the prescribed clear and read sequence.
Build a table of delay setting, capture status, link state, and measured sample alignment. Find a region with repeatable results rather than choosing the first setting that produces a passing indication. The width of a usable region is more informative than one isolated success.
Check multiple devices together
For a multichannel system, overlay the acceptable regions for all devices. The selected setting must satisfy the combined arrangement, including distribution skew. A setting near the center of one device’s window may sit at the edge of another device’s window.
For example, inject a common repeatable stimulus into two acquisition paths and compare their reported sample positions after each reset. Retain both the alignment result and timing status. Matching link counters alone does not show that the analog acquisition paths have retained the intended relationship.
Repeat the events that alter timing
Exercise power cycling, converter reset, clock restart, and supported mode changes. Include relevant temperature and supply conditions because one laboratory delay sweep does not represent every operating condition.
If results alternate between alignments, preserve individual captures instead of averaging them. Check clock sequencing, SYSREF delivery, and initialization ordering before assuming a data-lane signal-integrity problem.
Save the delay sweep, overlapping capture region, selected setting, initialization script version, and repeated alignment measurements. State the number and type of restarts tested. The release evidence should establish repeatable capture with usable margin under the supported conditions, while identifying any modes that require a separate calibration or timing setting.
