An audio link can produce recognizable sound while decoding each sample incorrectly. A one bit alignment mismatch may resemble a gain error, distortion, or unstable sign handling. Check the serialized word boundary before investigating the analog signal chain.

Mark the first valid bit

The NXP I2S bus specification places the next word’s most significant bit one clock period after the word select transition. This timing detail distinguishes standard I2S from formats that align their first data bit differently. A peripheral labeled audio serial interface may support several formats, so its name alone does not establish the active timing.

Capture bit clock, word select, and data together. Mark the receiver’s sampling edge and count to the most significant bit from the word boundary. Check the transmitter and receiver register settings against that physical observation.

Use a recognizable digital pattern

When possible, transmit a known sample pattern rather than relying initially on a sine wave. Choose different values for the two channels and patterns that expose both the most significant bit and lower bits. Avoid all zeros or repeated ones, which can conceal a shift.

Compare the captured serial word with the value stored in the receiver buffer. Distinguish serial alignment from byte ordering in memory. A correct wire protocol can still be misinterpreted when software reads a packed or sign extended sample using the wrong type.

Separate word width and slot width

Record the number of meaningful sample bits and the number of bit clocks allocated to each channel. These need not be the same. Determine how unused positions are filled and how the receiver handles them.

For a hypothetical stereo stream using two 32 bit slots at 48 kHz, the bit clock is 3.072 MHz. A 24 bit sample can occupy such a slot without changing that clock calculation. Verify the actual implementation instead of deriving slot width from converter resolution alone.

Confirm channels and startup

Apply a signal to one channel at a time and confirm its destination in memory and in subsequent processing. Repeat after reset and after changing sample rate. Some failures arise when one device begins receiving before the interface configuration is complete.

Save an annotated timing capture, the known transmitted values, the received buffer representation, and relevant format registers. Once the digital mapping is demonstrated, return to analog amplitude and noise measurements. This sequence prevents a protocol alignment error from being compensated incorrectly with an analog gain change or a software scale factor.
