A flexible tail can become locally rigid where solder spreads beyond the intended terminal. The resulting edge may move bending into a short unprotected conductor section. The solder joint can be electrically sound while the mechanical transition has become less durable.

Define the soldered region as part of the construction

Show the exposed copper, coverlay boundary and stiffener outline on the same detail. The support needs to cover the relevant load path after soldering, not just the unsoldered pad. Include the permitted solder extent when the connection sits close to a moving region.

Epec identifies stiffeners as local support and strain-relief features in flex constructions. Their position must be coordinated with the actual termination. A stiffener that ends beneath the middle of a soldered region does not produce the same transition as one supporting the complete joint.

Inspect the boundary after the real assembly process

Compare terminals made with the intended flux, solder amount, heating method and orientation. Wetting along exposed copper depends on the available path and process conditions. A hand-built sample with carefully limited solder may not represent a production operation that heats several contacts together.

  • Record the farthest soldered point relative to a visible datum.
  • Look for lifted coverlay or solder entering an unintended opening.
  • Check both sides when the termination permits access from either face.
  • Examine reworked samples if rework is part of the approved process.

Correct the geometry without sacrificing the joint

For a lap-soldered tail, reducing exposed copper may limit spread but also reduce the available joint area. Extending support can protect the region but shorten the working flex length. Compare both consequences before changing the artwork. The joint requirement and the motion requirement must remain satisfied together.

A qualification fixture should hold the termination as the product does and bend the free tail through its specified motion. Monitor the circuit and inspect the edge of the soldered region after testing. Use the coverlay opening review to control the exposed path and the bend-zone definition to control the mechanical boundary. State acceptance in terms of the finished soldered construction, so inspection does not approve an unsupported rigid extension merely because the original bare flex drawing was correct.
