A shield film can look continuous across a flexible circuit while making a poor connection to its grounding lands. The visible metallic layer is only one part of the path. The conductive adhesive, coverlay opening and copper surface determine whether the intended connection actually exists.

Draw the complete contact stack

Epec describes shield films that connect through selective coverlay openings using conductive adhesive. For the selected product, identify which adhesive face contacts the land, which outer face is insulated and whether the shield can bridge unintended exposed features. A film outline without a contact-window drawing leaves those questions unresolved.

Evaluate the minimum overlap after film placement, coverlay registration and copper tolerances are combined. A nominally generous land can have little usable contact area when the opening shifts. Specify the intended grounding net and ensure nearby signal openings cannot be captured by the conductive adhesive.

Measure the interface rather than a convenient parallel path

A resistance measurement between two ground pads may bypass the shield entirely through the copper ground network. Provide access that forces the test current through the intended film contact, or use a representative coupon whose topology makes the path unambiguous. Define where probes touch and whether probe pressure could improve a marginal contact temporarily.

  • Identify every required shield connection and its acceptance method.
  • Check contact after lamination and after representative thermal exposure.
  • Repeat relevant measurements after the required flex motion.
  • Use isolation checks to detect unintended shield-to-signal connections.

Keep electrical and shielding evidence distinct

Low DC resistance demonstrates a conductive path under the test conditions. It does not by itself establish shielding effectiveness at the frequencies of concern. Contact placement, return geometry and discontinuities still influence the electromagnetic result. Evaluate the final assembly if the requirement concerns emissions or immunity.

For example, a film substitution may retain the same outline while changing adhesive thickness or contact behavior. Review that substitution through the coverlay-opening tolerance stack and the reference-plane review. The acceptance package should contain a contact map and meaningful measurements, so an attractive lamination photograph is never the sole evidence that the shield is grounded.
