In a rolling flex loop, the curved portion moves as the mechanism travels. Checking the bend radius at one endpoint can miss a smaller radius or a collision midway through the stroke. The important object is the complete moving shape, including how it changes after repeated cycling.

Map the loop through motion

Record the attachment points, available free length and orientation of the circuit. Observe several positions through the stroke rather than only the two end stops. Mark material locations on a representative sample so that movement of the curvature can be distinguished from sliding at a clamp. Use markings that do not stiffen or damage the circuit, and confirm that any camera access does not require removing a guide used by the real assembly.

FCT defines the neutral bend axis and describes flex construction choices. Apply those construction concepts to the actual trajectory. A bend-radius rule for a static installation does not establish the life of a moving loop.

Include features that alter local stiffness

Shield terminations, copper-density changes, coverlay overlaps and stiffener edges can redirect curvature. A loop that initially forms in an open region may migrate toward one of those transitions as the assembly settles. Friction against a guide can also make motion different in the forward and return directions.

  • Observe both travel directions at the relevant speed.
  • Check assembly extremes in free length and clamp position.
  • Record contact with guides, neighboring cables and housing surfaces.
  • Repeat trajectory observations after an initial run-in period.

Use the trajectory to improve the design

For a sliding carriage, adding extra free length may increase the radius at one endpoint while causing the loop to buckle into the housing near the other. A guide can control the path, but it introduces a rubbing interface. Evaluate that tradeoff using the same circuit stack and production surface finish.

Connect the measured trajectory to continuity monitoring during life testing and the clearance review for independently moving layers. Record where curvature is allowed to travel on the drawing or assembly specification. The qualification result should describe the mechanism and motion envelope, because a cycle count without that geometry cannot be transferred confidently to another installation.
