A drilling trial can appear repeatable because the drill diameter, spindle speed and feed setting are unchanged. Yet the entry sheet, backup material or panel arrangement may have changed between runs. Record the complete drilling sandwich before attributing a difference in hole quality to the drill itself.

Identify every layer in the setup

Union Tool’s FR-4 drilling parameter notes state that entry and backup material type and thickness can affect drilling conditions. The document’s numerical tables apply to their stated conditions; use its identification principle without treating an old table as a universal recipe.

Give the entry material and backup board a product identifier. Record thickness, orientation where relevant, prior use and how the stack is held. Include the number, construction and order of product panels between them.

Item Useful trial record
Entry sheet Product, thickness and condition
Product stack Panel identities and top-to-bottom positions
Backup Product, thickness and previously drilled areas
Machine setup Tool, program, support and extraction arrangement

Design the comparison around one question

If the question concerns a replacement entry sheet, retain the other approved conditions for the first comparison. Do not also change the drill model and stack height unless the experiment is explicitly evaluating that complete new combination.

Use representative hole families and inspect the resulting boards by stack position. Pooling all observations into one average can hide a problem concentrated in the lowest or highest panel.

Preserve the evidence before processing continues

  1. Label panels before separating the stack.
  2. Photograph the setup and relevant surfaces.
  3. Record observations using agreed hole-quality categories.
  4. Retain selected samples for the planned further examination.
  5. Connect later metallization observations to the original drilling run.

Keep the drilled backup where its condition helps explain a suspected support problem. Once it is discarded, the team may have only a machine settings file and no record of the physical contact beneath the panels.

Do not accept a substitute solely because the first few holes look good. Define the relevant coverage across tool use, panel position and the intended production condition with the process owner.

The conclusion should identify the exact material combination evaluated and the evidence supporting it. If only one construction was tested, keep the approval limited to that construction until further trials establish a broader scope.

For example, if an exit-side observation changes after the backup material is replaced, repeat the comparison with matched product panels before changing feed settings. That sequence tests the suspected material contribution while preserving the ability to investigate the machine setup separately if the observation remains.

For related preparation, see PCB process planning and inspection evidence. Retaining the physical setup makes later drilling or plating investigations substantially easier to interpret.
