A drawing title block can display a valid-looking revision while referring to the wrong source parameter. Project, variant, and document values may coexist, and an override can hide a later update. Verify the resolved text in the generated document rather than assuming every field follows the project metadata.
Altium’s Draftsman setup documentation describes parameter precedence, including document-level values that can override project or variant values. This makes a title-block check a data-resolution task as well as a visual proofreading task.
Identify the intended source of each field
List the document number, drawing revision, board identity, assembly variant, and any other release-critical labels. Decide which controlled source owns each value. A drawing revision and a PCB design revision may legitimately differ, so avoid forcing them to match without understanding their purpose.
Inspect the placed field or special string and the parameter definitions available to the document. Check for a local parameter with the same name as a project field. A template copied from another project can retain an override that is difficult to notice from the rendered page alone.
Trace the resolved value
| Check | Failure it can expose |
|---|---|
| Parameter name | Field references the wrong source |
| Scope and precedence | Local override hides an updated project value |
| Selected source and variant | Drawing resolves against another configuration |
| Generated output | Cached or previously exported text remains in circulation |
Use a controlled copy when testing resolution behavior. Change a clearly identifiable value, regenerate the drawing, and confirm which displayed fields respond. Restore the intended data afterward and retain only the approved output in the release package.
Review the complete drawing set
- Confirm metadata ownership and naming.
- Remove or document unintended overrides.
- Regenerate all affected sheets.
- Compare title blocks with the release manifest.
- Check the actual PDF or other delivered artifact.
Do not stop at the first sheet. Multi-sheet documents may contain copied text objects, different templates, or manually entered fields. Check page numbering and total-page fields as well, particularly when sheets have been inserted or removed near release.
Keep literal text deliberate. A fixed customer drawing number may be appropriate, while a fixed current date or variant label can become misleading. The important distinction is whether the value is intentionally static or expected to track design data.
The final release should make document identity understandable without opening the CAD project. Correct geometry accompanied by an incorrect revision label can still send manufacturing to the wrong instruction set, so include metadata resolution in the ordinary output review.
