A change to the desmear route is a manufacturing-process change, even if the finished PCB drawing remains identical. Qualification should address the material and hole structures actually produced. Replacing one process name with another in a traveler does not establish equivalent results.
Describe the changed operation precisely
Nordson’s VIA-series information identifies plasma applications including desmear and etchback. Atotech describes wet-chemical desmear and metallization systems. These examples show distinct process routes; neither source establishes universal interchangeability for every laminate or interconnection.
Identify the operation being replaced and any preparation, rinse, drying or subsequent processing that also changes. Review the entire proposed sequence with its equipment and material suppliers.
Select a representative construction matrix
| Dimension | Selection question |
|---|---|
| Material system | Which approved products must the route support? |
| Hole structure | Which geometries represent the intended range? |
| Loading | Which panel arrangements represent normal operation? |
| Downstream work | Which metallization and assembly exposures follow? |
Do not choose only the easiest coupon unless qualification is explicitly limited to that coupon’s construction. Record why each selected sample represents a relevant part of the production scope.
Keep the baseline comparison interpretable
Use matched material and drilling histories where practical. Identify both process routes and retain the relevant approved settings through controlled records. Avoid publishing generic chemistry or machine recipes that bypass the supplier’s process-specific instructions.
Agree examinations before the trial. Include the evidence needed to assess the prepared structure and the subsequent interconnection, rather than relying only on a surface appearance immediately after treatment.
Release the change with boundaries
- Review trial deviations and sample traceability.
- Compare results against the agreed requirements.
- Resolve unexplained differences.
- Approve the constructions and loading conditions actually covered.
- Update travelers, training and future change triggers.
If production expands beyond the qualified material or geometry range, evaluate whether more evidence is needed. A general process approval should not conceal that the original study covered only a narrow product set.
Retain the old route and new route identifiers in the lot history. This makes later reliability observations useful without requiring the investigator to reconstruct when a manufacturing instruction changed.
For example, a trial covering a rigid epoxy construction should not silently authorize the same change for a mixed-material rigid-flex product. Add the untested construction to the open qualification list, identify the relevant structures, and obtain the additional evidence before expanding the approved route’s production scope.
The drill-smear sample guide supports evidence selection, and manufacturing route planning helps identify which neighboring operations belong in the change review.
