A bag containing the exact BOM quantity may still be unsuitable for an automated build. Short carrier segments, damaged pockets, missing cover tape, and setup consumption can reduce the material available for placement. Review the physical presentation before treating the purchased count as an executable kit.
JLCPCB’s assembly FAQ discusses additional components for production loss. The appropriate allowance and packing requirements depend on the receiving assembler and process. Obtain the requirements for the actual package and delivery form instead of applying an arbitrary percentage to every line.
Describe the material that will arrive
Ask whether the supplier will deliver one continuous strip, several short strips, or re-reeled material. Record the component count in each segment and preserve its lot identification. A single total hides the handling problem when many small pieces cannot be loaded in the planned feeder. Tell the assembler about splices and mixed strip lengths before it commits to a particular feeding arrangement.
Separate occupied pockets from empty leader and trailer. Empty tape can serve a handling purpose but cannot satisfy component demand. Conversely, components in a portion that the assembler cannot feed should not be counted as available without an agreed recovery method.
Build a practical quantity ledger
| Quantity | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Placement demand | Required placements for the authorized board quantity |
| Received material | Verified components across identified carrier segments |
| Unusable material | Damaged, unidentifiable, or unfeedable material |
| Setup allowance | Agreed consumption beyond successful placements |
State how partial strips will be handled. An assembler may use another feeding method or request different packing, but that decision belongs in the build preparation record. Do not assume a technician will improvise a reliable process after the line is scheduled.
Close the handling questions early
- Share package and carrier photographs before shipment.
- Confirm accepted minimum presentation with the assembler.
- Identify shortages using usable material, not invoice count.
- Arrange replenishment or an approved alternative method.
- Record consumed and returned quantities after the build.
Preserve handling and moisture-control requirements while counting or repacking. Opening protective packaging purely to obtain a photograph may create unnecessary exposure; use available supplier information first and coordinate any required inspection with the receiving process.
This review concerns whether the material can enter production predictably. It does not establish electrical authenticity, component suitability, or permission to substitute another device. If sufficient parts exist but their presentation remains uncertain, keep that as a distinct readiness issue rather than hiding it inside a general shortage count.
