A current probe that works well for a large switching pulse may be a poor choice for a much smaller standby current. Offset, noise, and drift can become a substantial fraction of the quantity being measured. Before interpreting a small nonzero trace as board consumption, establish the probe’s zero behavior and applicable accuracy.
Follow the specific probe procedure
The Tektronix TCP0030A instruction manual provides a degauss and autozero procedure and indicates when that operation is required. Its status indication is part of the instrument’s valid operating condition. Other current probe technologies and models can have different preparation requirements, so use the manual for the actual instrument.
Record probe identity, range, bandwidth, coupling, warm-up state, and zero procedure. Confirm that the intended waveform, DC level, peak current, and frequency content are within the specified measurement capability. A headline maximum current rating says little about resolution near zero.
Establish a baseline around the measurement
- Prepare and zero the probe under the manufacturer’s specified conditions.
- Record a baseline with the same acquisition settings used for the test.
- Measure the board current with a defined conductor orientation and operating state.
- Recheck the baseline after the capture or test sequence.
- Investigate meaningful baseline movement before interpreting small differences.
For illustration, an offset of 8 mA would be a minor fraction of a 2 A pulse but a large fraction of a claimed 12 mA standby current. These values are hypothetical; compare the actual probe specifications and observed baseline with the required measurement uncertainty.
Choose another method when necessary
A suitable shunt measurement, source-measure instrument, or dedicated low-current instrument may better resolve a steady small current. Each alternative has its own burden voltage, dynamic response, and connection effects. Check that the measurement does not change the board’s supply enough to alter the operating state.
For bursty products, distinguish peak current, average current, and charge over a defined interval. A display that averages over an arbitrary acquisition window can hide a short wake event or include it inconsistently. Synchronize the observation with the product behavior when making comparisons.
Save the zero checks, raw capture, operating state, and calculation method with the result. If the baseline uncertainty is comparable to the claimed improvement between revisions, report that limitation and use a more suitable method. A believable current measurement describes both the board’s behavior and the instrument’s ability to resolve it.
Record wake triggers and communication activity so an unexpected burst can be connected to a reproducible product event.
