A crystal and two capacitors selected in the schematic can behave differently once traces, pads, device pins, and nearby copper are included. Review the oscillator after placement and routing, then verify it on hardware. Frequency accuracy alone does not establish reliable startup across the intended operating range.

Start with compatible component requirements

ST’s oscillator design guide discusses crystal parameters, load capacitance, oscillator gain margin, and layout for its MCU families. It is a useful example of why the crystal and the active oscillator must be evaluated together. For another device family, use its own oscillator documentation and limits. ST: oscillator design guidelines.

Record the exact crystal, specified load capacitance, equivalent series resistance information, drive-level limit, and the MCU or oscillator mode. Check that the package suffix and frequency match the approved design. A crystal with the same frequency but a different load specification is not automatically interchangeable.

Revisit the capacitor calculation

For the common simplified two-capacitor model, the series contribution is C1×C2/(C1+C2), with additional parasitic capacitance represented separately. Use the model and definitions given by the device supplier. Do not insert an assumed stray-capacitance value as though it were a measured property of the finished board.

  • Review trace length, pad geometry, and device-pin contribution.
  • Check nearby planes or guards against the recommended layout.
  • Keep unrelated fast signals away from the sensitive oscillator region.
  • Include component tolerance and operating conditions in the review.
  • Record which assumptions need hardware confirmation.

For example, a layout revision that moves the crystal to make room for a connector may change routing and parasitics while leaving the schematic untouched. Treat that move as a clock-circuit change and repeat the relevant checks.

Measure without changing the circuit excessively

A probe can load a sensitive oscillator node. Use the supplier’s recommended measurement method or an appropriate buffered observation point where available. Record the probe and setup when comparing frequency or startup behavior. A waveform that appears only after a probe is attached is evidence that the measurement interaction needs investigation.

Verify startup and operating margin

Check the operating states relevant to the product, including power-up and applicable temperature and supply conditions. Confirm drive and startup behavior using the device manufacturer’s procedure. Keep the tested crystal, capacitors, layout revision, and configuration settings together. The final release should preserve the complete oscillator implementation, not merely a nominal frequency printed on the bill of materials.

Keep optional tuning positions documented so production knows which capacitors are installed and which are reserved for engineering evaluation.
