Using coverlay in one region and flexible solder mask in another creates a transition that needs its own drawing and process review. A pair of independently acceptable materials does not automatically produce an acceptable shared boundary. Inspect the overlap in the actual finished construction.
Identify why the transition exists
Record the local functions of the two regions, including component access and intended flexing. Draw the boundary relative to fixed product features so it can be checked after fabrication. Do not use an approximate shaded illustration as the only location requirement.
Epec describes selective coverlay and solder-mask application with a controlled overlap and cautions about its relationship to bending. This is a reason to review the combined region, not permission to place the transition anywhere on a moving flex tail.
Define the complete local stack
| Region | Definition to retain |
|---|---|
| Coverlay-only area | Film and adhesive construction |
| Overlap | Order of materials and allowed extent |
| Mask-only area | Approved flexible mask and cured state |
| Nearby bend | Location and intended movement |
Include any later adhesive, shielding or stiffener that reaches the transition. The visible surface before assembly may not be the final mechanical arrangement.
Review the manufacturing sequence
Ask how the boundary is formed, aligned and inspected. Confirm that preparation and curing instructions are suitable for the exact material combination. If the supplier proposes a different order, evaluate the resulting construction rather than accepting it solely because both material names remain unchanged.
For example, an overlap near a connector can affect installation even when it is outside the main bend. Assemble a representative part and check the actual contact, seating and handling path around that location.
Qualify the combined boundary
- Inspect the transition after all coating operations.
- Verify the required coverage and exposed areas.
- Check adhesion or other specified properties with an appropriate method.
- Include the relevant assembly and bending sequence.
- Record the approved materials and boundary tolerance.
A visual check of an unbent coupon cannot establish the behavior of every installed configuration. Keep the qualification tied to the construction and movement that were actually represented.
When shortening a flex tail or moving a stiffener, reopen the boundary review. The protective materials may be unchanged while the overlap moves into a different mechanical environment.
Preserve a section or an annotated local profile when the overlap affects a mating clearance. The overall thickness stated for a uniform flex region should not be used as a substitute for the actual combined thickness at this boundary.
The exposed-land inspection guide covers a neighboring adhesive boundary. The bonding sequence guide helps account for materials added during assembly.
