A ceramic circuit inspected while still in a panel has not yet demonstrated its final separated edge. Define acceptance after the actual separation operation, including the relationship to nearby metallization and assembly features. A panel-level electrical pass cannot show every condition created when individual parts are released.
Specify the supplied and delivered forms
Identify the ceramic, metallization construction and whether the order is supplied as a panel or individual parts. Agree on the separation method with the substrate manufacturer. Do not adapt an organic-PCB depaneling instruction merely because the outline looks similar.
Kyocera’s metallized ceramic-substrate information identifies post-firing laser processing and scribe features among its capabilities. Those features require a construction-specific agreement; a published capability does not establish the separation settings or edge limits for every ceramic assembly.
Define what the edge inspection covers
| Feature | Question |
|---|---|
| Final outline | Does the part meet the released dimensions? |
| Ceramic edge | Does its condition meet agreed acceptance? |
| Metallization boundary | Is the required relationship to the edge retained? |
| Mounting region | Can the separated part seat as intended? |
| Loose material | Has the approved post-separation handling been completed? |
Use consistent magnification and lighting for visual comparisons. Identify the inspected side and edge location rather than recording only a general photograph of the part.
Preserve panel position during investigation
Keep the location of each separated piece and the order of separation where relevant. A repeated edge condition can be easier to understand when it is mapped to the original panel and tooling contacts.
For example, several damaged corners may all correspond to one support position even though they appear on different sides of the finished parts after rotation. Retaining the panel map prevents that pattern from being lost.
If components are mounted before separation, qualify the populated construction. The fixture must account for their presence and the operation’s permitted loading, not only the bare ceramic geometry.
Keep acceptable edge examples specific to the ceramic and separation route. A photograph approved for a different substrate thickness or metallization setback can mislead inspectors when the functional edge requirements have changed.
Verify the complete delivered condition
Perform the required electrical, dimensional and assembly checks after separation. Where a suspect edge needs further examination, preserve the sample and use an appropriate laboratory method instead of attempting an unapproved local repair.
Include any later cleaning, plating or handling in the final acceptance stage. An earlier edge inspection should not be presented as evidence of a surface modified afterward.
The preparation-artifact guide helps interpret destructive examination, while organic-board edge inspection provides a separate example whose acceptance limits should remain distinct.
