A current calibration label does not by itself establish that an instrument is suitable for every measurement in a PCB test. The certificate may cover selected functions and ranges under particular conditions. Read those details against the actual test method before treating the instrument as qualified for the task.
NIST’s calibration certificate preparation guidance identifies the importance of clear item identification, results, units, methods, and uncertainty. Use these elements as an engineering reading checklist, while following the requirements that apply to your own calibration program.
Match the certificate to the station
Confirm the instrument model and serial number, including any relevant module or channel identity. Check whether the item was adjusted or repaired and whether the report distinguishes its condition before and after that work. Preserve the entire certificate rather than a cropped pass statement separated from its scope. Check attachments and footnotes for excluded points or restricted conditions, and record the certificate identifier so a replacement document can be distinguished from the version originally reviewed.
Then list the station’s measurement functions and operating ranges. Compare them with the certificate’s coverage. A documented DC voltage calibration should not be assumed to establish every AC, resistance, timing, or temperature capability of the same instrument.
Review the application conditions
| Certificate information | Application question |
|---|---|
| Function and range | Does the test use a covered measurement mode? |
| Conditions and method | Are relevant differences understood? |
| Reported corrections | Does the station apply them correctly if required? |
| Uncertainty statement | How does it contribute to the complete measurement budget? |
The complete test also includes probes, cables, switching, fixtures, environmental effects, and the method used to contact the board. A calibrated instrument does not remove those contributors. Evaluate them separately instead of attributing the entire station capability to the certificate.
Resolve gaps explicitly
- Identify functions or ranges without adequate evidence.
- Ask the calibration provider or responsible metrology specialist for clarification.
- Determine whether additional calibration or method validation is needed.
- Record restrictions on station use until the gap is resolved.
- Link the reviewed certificate to the station configuration.
If an out-of-tolerance condition is reported, evaluate its relevance to previous measurements using the affected function, range, and time period. Do not assume either that every earlier result is invalid or that the issue has no product impact.
Close the review with the approved use and any limitations. The test-limit review addresses the separate decision of how measurement capability relates to acceptance criteria.
