A loop gain plot can look plausible even when the converter or measurement setup violates the assumptions behind it. The injection point, perturbation amplitude, and operating mode all affect whether the result represents a useful small signal response. Establish those conditions before reading crossover frequency or phase margin from the display.
Select a defensible injection point
Identify the feedback path and follow the measurement instrument and converter guidance for inserting the injection element. The TI explanation of loop gain measurement connections emphasizes the impedance relationship on either side of the injection point and the importance of appropriate source amplitude and isolation.
Do not choose a convenient exposed pad merely because it lies somewhere in the control loop. Document the intended signal path, measurement polarity, and which transfer function the instrument calculates. Incorrect channel orientation can produce a misleading phase interpretation.
Hold a defined operating state
Record input voltage, load, output voltage, switching mode, and temperature. Verify the converter remains in that state throughout the sweep. A light load mode transition or current limit event can make a single linear description inappropriate for part of the measurement.
Start with conditions relevant to the design question, then repeat at other required corners. A plot measured at nominal input and moderate load does not automatically establish the behavior at minimum input, maximum load, or a different capacitor population.
Check injection amplitude sensitivity
Repeat a sweep with reduced perturbation amplitude while keeping other settings fixed. The result should remain reasonably consistent within the available measurement noise if both measurements represent the same small signal behavior. Large changes require investigation of nonlinearity, insufficient signal level, or setup limitations.
Observe the output and relevant control signals during the sweep. Excessive injection may force clipping, mode changes, or protective behavior; very small injection may leave the received signal difficult to distinguish from noise. Use the instrument’s supported amplitude shaping when needed, documenting the profile.
Validate the interpretation
Inspect the complete gain and phase curves rather than reporting only one marker. Check for unexpected discontinuities, poor repeatability, and frequency regions outside the useful range of the injection transformer or probes. Preserve the raw data and setup photograph.
Compare the loop result with a representative time domain load response as complementary evidence. Agreement supports the design interpretation, while disagreement is a reason to revisit the model, operating point, or measurement arrangement. Release the result with its defined conditions and uncertainty; a Bode plot is evidence about a particular closed loop system state, not an unconditional stability certificate.
