A microcontroller pin can serve one purpose during reset and another after firmware starts. An LED, sensor output or programming adapter connected for the later GPIO function may change the level sampled for boot configuration. This can produce a board that starts only with one peripheral disconnected or after a manual reset.

Identify the exact device’s strap behavior

Use the current datasheet for the fitted device and package. List the strap functions, internal pulls, sampling event and setup or hold requirements. The Espressif ESP32 schematic checklist directs designers to device boot-configuration information and pin defaults. Do not transfer a pin list from one processor family member to another without verification.

Distinguish power-on reset from software reset and other reset sources where the device does. The sampling behavior may differ. A board that recovers after a reset button press has not necessarily demonstrated a reliable cold start.

Draw the pin circuit before firmware exists

Include every external pull, LED path, capacitor, level translator and connected peripheral output. Record whether each external device is powered and driving during the sampling interval. Its eventual firmware-controlled state is irrelevant if the strap is sampled earlier.

Calculate the resulting voltage using relevant tolerances, leakage and drive behavior. Compare it with guaranteed input thresholds under the applicable supply conditions. An internal weak pull may not overcome an external device or another resistor network.

Review timing as well as DC level

Capacitance and supply ramp behavior can delay a strap’s transition. Mark when the processor leaves reset relative to the strap voltage and peripheral supply. A correct final level does not establish that the level was valid when sampled.

Include debug and automatic programming circuitry in the timing review. Adapter control signals can alter reset and boot pins when a port opens or closes. Verify the intended interaction and the behavior when the adapter is attached but its host software is not running.

Test representative startup combinations

Capture supply, reset and strap voltage during cold startup with peripherals connected, disconnected and independently powered where supported. Check the reported boot mode or observable boot behavior. Repeat the documented recovery procedure so a manufacturing error does not leave the board inaccessible.

If a pin remains difficult to control during reset, moving the later GPIO function may be simpler than relying on a fragile resistor compromise. Retain the strap table, external loading analysis and startup captures with the pin assignment. Recheck the design whenever a peripheral, LED circuit or programming interface on those pins changes.
